Marta Eugenia decided to paint while queuing for a Postgraduate course on Education, “there was a sign advertising Fine Arts courses, and in that instant painting became a mayor part in my life.” From that moment onwards Marta has been painting and experimenting a varied range of techniques.
This exhibition Aire, Tierra, Agua y Usted, is a self-discovery journey from the last 20 years, exploring landscape to convey a sense of place only possible in the canvas. A series of carefully layered colors and textures, resulting in an ethereal vision of a place from within. This series of landscapes departs from the Costa Rican nature, ensuing in a more individual interpretation.
A particular characteristic of Marta’s use of color is the fact that she is officially colorblind. So her colors are born out of her own interpretation of the labels: green, red or orange, are a very abstract concept for Marta. Blue is a color that Marta “can see” whether green or red, she can only feel.
Marta’s work appears completely open to a final interpretation from the viewer. That is, we are presented with a fictional image and we complete it with our own memory of landscape.
